Maria la Gorda:

A divers paradise - Maria la Gorda (Mary the Fat) is a remote enclave, located in western Cuba, on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula of which UNESCO has declared an International Biosphere Reserve. Divers can enjoy crystal-clear, warm waters in 39 diving spots. Many experts consider that the most special characteristic is the fact that divers can see black corals at a depth of 14 metres, as well as marine species such as barracudas and red snappers. Experts consider that the seabed at María la Gorda is among the top ten places in Latin America, due to its abundant marine life and extraordinarily beautiful corals. It is also a good base for naturalists looking to explore the flora and fauna of the area.

The name of the region comes from a legend, according to which, a Venezuelan aboriginal woman was abducted by pirates and abandoned in eastern Cuba, in an eight-km-long beach with crystal-clear waters. The woman, whose name was María, settled in the area and opened an inn, giving her name to this territory.

Hotel Maria La Gorda:

Description: Perhaps the most isolated hotel in Cuba, the Hotel Maria La Gorda is frequented in the main by scuba enthusiasts who are drawn to the excellent nearby diving. However, an increasing number of visitors are attracted simply by its superb sandy white beaches and laid back, uncommercial atmosphere which is in contrast to so many of Cuba's beach resorts. The hotel offers beach side accommodation in three 8 room buildings right on the beach or cabins in woodland 50 metres from the beach. The location of the Hotel is Playa Maria La Gorda, Pinar del Rio.
